I found twitterspy and never looked back. Hit twitterspy@jabber.org then use "twlogin" to sign into twitter. Use "Track" to track tweets with summize syntax and use "watch_friends on" to get updates from your friends. Granted, it doesn't stick to your "device" preferences but it's a small price to pay for Twitter-via-IM. If the real Twitter IM Bot ever surfaces again, I might give it another whirl, but I've been digging twitterspy as its replacement for months now.

The funny thing about all this is the fact that they shouldn't have been doing a redesign until they had the im client fixed!

However, I don't think anyone at Twitter is losing sleep over it.
